MARCH 2010 in BARBADOS

Plays, concerts, operas in the luxuriant gardens of Holders House!  In a few weeks it will host another set of outstanding performances by artistes of international stature. Last year was my first year of attendance since Luciano Pavarotti performed ten years ago at the brilliantly produced annual Holder's Season in the parish of St. James in Barbados, and the experience was wonderful! The setting immediately captivates you, and the performers raise the starry roof to a most satisfying level.

Situated at Holder's Hill the 17th century plantation house overlooks the well known Green Monkey Golf Course of the luxurious Sandy Lane Hotel. From Holder's House one has a beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea and it is close to Holetown and the capitol Bridgetown and about a half hour drive from Grantley Adams International Airport.

One will not be disappointed with this year's fare as once again Wendy Kidd and her staff has recruited top-notch talent from around the world from March 18 to 27. From classical piano with James Rhodes;Shakespeare - As You Like Him; A Tribute to Bing Crosby;Jazz with Ian Shaw and Liane Carroll to Mica Paris and more, it should be another enjoyable season!

And another great event in March in Barbados is the annual Sandy Lane Gold Cup at the Garrison Savannah on March 6. Considered the most prestigious thoroughbred horse racing event in the southern Caribbean, Patrick Husbands, the champion jockey of Canada is returning after a lengthy absence to ride at this hugely popular event. He will be mounting Sterwins, a Eugene Melnyk seven year old gelding that will be brought in from Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto. Of course there will be several outstanding horses from Barbados and the wider region that will make Saturday March 6th at the Garrison another exciting one on the Barbados sports calendar!
